In the process, the company believes that this technology will help millions of people.

The company has partnered with a company in Zimbabwe called Zonful Energy, which distributes the Sun King(tm) Home series. Zonful Energy, a leading pay as you go company in Zimbabwe, has distributed 10,000 Sun King(tm) solar home systems over four months. It also partners with commercial companies and not-for-profit organizations to provide financing for solar lighting systems. There are currently over 20 million people using the Sun King(tm) Home 60 and Home 120 Plus products in the region.

NIWA Solar

When I first visited the Greenlight Planet solar & wind power repair clinic in Kenya, I asked Benson about a solar panel device. He explained to me that his customer, a farmer from a nearby sisal plantation, had received a device with a defective solar upgrade plug, which allows you to connect multiple panels in modular fashion. Benson explained to me that the solar device I bought did not provide me with enough lighting hours.

In September, Greenlight Planet, a provider of solar-powered home energy systems in sub-Saharan Africa, secured $90m in funding from investors. The financing will go towards replacing unsecured debt with secured debt, reducing the interest rate. The company will also consider raising equity or debt for expansion purposes. Greenlight Planet, based in San Francisco, has not yet stated how much new funding it is seeking.

The Sustainable Energy for All Initiative is an example of this approach. The Sustainable Energy for All Initiative, a joint project of the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and the Lighting Africa programme of the UN, are examples of such initiatives. The Sustainable Energy for All Initiative (SE4A), which is a UN initiative, argues that solar power should be widely available in all countries.
