The cost of integration in a high-wind and solar scenario includes balancing costs, transmission costs, and backup and residual generation costs. For a twenty-percent-wind-generation European grid, these costs comprise only one-third of the total cost of energy integration. Among these, balancing costs, transmission costs, and backup and residual generation costs account for the remaining two-thirds of total integration costs. Curtailment costs are not significant in either scenario. However, if wind and solar share reaches 25 percent, curtailment costs will rapidly increase.

LCOE is a widely used metric in the renewable energy industry. However, it does not reflect the value generated by the technology. Since electricity prices fluctuate over time, wind and solar plant cannot decide when to generate. Ultimately, generation revenues depend on the quality of the wind or solar resource, the location of the plant, and power prices in the region. In addition, there are some costs that can increase, including the cost of fuel.

While solar and wind generation have the lowest marginal costs, their integration costs are relatively high, reducing the value of energy.
